Stock No 2379
An imposing Northern French carved figure of a Saint, probably St Peter, circa 1450 – 1500. The quality of the carving is first rate with a gentle expressiveness in the facial looks, and superbly executed hair, beard and robes. There is a significant amount of original polychrome underneath a later covering, probably 18th Century, of white pigment,. He has lost his feet, and both lower arms and it is probable that he would have held a staff or crook in his right hand. There is significant insect damage to the back of the figure, but the density of the wood is very solid. He is standing on a later plinth.
