Pair of Pierced Tracery Heads

Pair of Pierced Tracery Heads

Stock No 2354

Outstanding pair of deeply carved English Oak Pierced Tracery Heads from Somerset, circa 1470. They would have been on the upper section of a Church screen and reputedly came from St Mary Magdaleine Church, Taunton. The design is composed around a primitive semi-circle with roundels for spandrels within which are quatrefoils centred with a rose. At the apex of the semi-circle is a cross, below which are three sectional areas with the usual motifs typical of this period. They are divided below by four leaf and bud lozenges which form the row of eight Gothic arches each with a rose in its centre. The tenons from the original fixing joints are still partially remaining. Both panels have had some minor repairs and strengthening in Victorian times when they were reused in a later screen for the Methodist church in Taunton.

Dimensions: Width 28 inches, Height 12.5 inches

Price: £2,950
