Figural Group
Stock No 2346
French Gothic Figural group of the Virgin and Child, probably from the Alpine Region of South East France, circa 1300. An exceptional survival with significant traces of original polychrome. Some of the red pigment is later but is of significant age. The French Gothic style of this group is typified by the elongation of the figures and of the curved nature of the Virgin’s head as she reads her book. It was probably located high up as part of a group of various figures on an Altar. The hands of the Christ Child are lost.
