Carved Fragment

Rare English Oak Carved Fragment reputed to have come from Bishops Waltham, circa 1450 – 1500. It is from the upper section of a Pew End and the chamfered edges indicate that it would have been seated in a surrounding frame. The carving is of exceptional quality and depicts an enriched quatrefoil with spandrels at each corner, and within it the entwined initials “B” and a cusped “W” surrounded by an intricately interwoven knotted device with foliate ends.
