Carved Panel
Stock No 2325
James 1 English West Country Oak carved panel, circa 1610 – 1620. The charm of this item relates to its paradoxical style, whereby the Renaissance style arch has naive figures substituted for the pillars supporting the arcade, the figures having an almost doll-like resemblance. The majority of the carving style however is quite sophisticated, with the running double guilloche of the arch, the stylised Tree of Life in the centre and the delightful flower heads at the base. There is some wear to the right hand side, and some of the detail has been lost.
