Walnut Panel
Stock No 2314
Italian Walnut panel, circa 1550, depicting St Jerome. The carving is in virtually full relief, and is of exceptional quality. It represents the “penitent” St Jerome, wearing few clothes and in the desert symbolised by the stylised rocks and the dead tree. As usual, he is accompanied by his attribute of the Lion. The scene is set within a roundel, and at each corner is a spandrel with a delightfully carved four petalled flower. Interestingly, the back of the panel is covered with a range of oil based colours and it would appear that at some time the back has been used as an Artist’s palette! This may explain the loss of Jerome’s left handand the hat it would have been holding, as this would have been the most vulnerable part of the carving.
