Carved Figure
Stock No 2297
A painted Oak carved Angel from Totnes Church, dated 1635, formerly in the Pitt Rivers Museum. It was donated to this museum by a Mrs Forbes-Shillingstone in 1899, who presumably had acquired it when the Church was restored by G G Scott from 1867 to 1874.
The Angel is carved simply in a doll-like manner, and is in male form with an almost Pharaonic style beard. It is very rare to find wooden carved Angels bearded. The robes are carved with simple folds. The wings are missing, however, some of the pegs and peg holes for fixing them can be clearly seen. There are plentiful traces of red polychrome and of the black numbering of the date against a white background of the shield, this original polychrome has been painted over in Georgian times with a shade of ochre.
The remains of the original fixing nail are situated beneath the bottom of the shield. There is also the museum catalogue inscription written on the back of the figure in fine script
