Carved Head
Stock No 2284
A very important piece Medieval woodwork of good provenance. A superbly carved English Oak boss, circa 1400, of a bearded head set amongst foliage which probably depicts Christ, or God the Father. It has retained a remarkable amount of its medieval polychrome with traces of original gold in the beard. The face has retained a lot of the original colours with rosy cheeks, vermilion lips and nostrils and some of the outline for the pupils of the eyes.
This item was owned by Ralph Cox and has his label fixed to the back with the inscription – “St Botolph Boston. Early XV Century Roof boss. East Anglia?”
It had been covered in later gold paint which has been removed by an expert conservator. (A copy of his conservation report and a copy of a report on the paint analysis are available)
Dimensions: 11cm square.
PRICE: £7950
