Pair of Oak Backstools
Stock No 1149
A pair of well carved 17th Century Cheshire Back-stools of excellent colour, circa 1690. Each has a crest rail carved with fruiting berry and scroll work. There are pyramid finials on each side, and the panelled back is decorated with flowering plants. The boarded seats are above channel moulded rails and the legs are joined by front barley twist stretchers. One would originally have had a pipe drawer in the side which has been lost and has been replaced with a later rail. These two chairs are illustrated and described in "Early British Chairs and Seats 1500 to 1700" by Tobias Jellinek.
