Chair

Chair

Stock No 1099

Superb quality Oak Single Chair, of relatively small proportions , circa 1680. The cresting rail has a semicircular top carved like a fan above the rectangular section carved with two mythical beasts. The back panel has a wonderfully carved upper section of a serpent set within, and flowing from, four leafs. The whole ensemble creates an overall impression of great energy and symmetry, and despite the considerable density of decoration achieves a fine unity of design. The uprights have an abstract running decoration up to their tops which are carved with inward scrolls. The lower back cross rail matches the foliate lunette motifs on the front rail below the seat. The legs are in turned pillar style enhanced with ring turnings. There are two later pegs to the seat and also some of the nails are later, presumably to re-secure it over time. There is also one very small “fill it” to the right hand front side of the seat.

Dimensions: Height 101cm, Width 42.5cm, Depth 40cm

Price: £1850
