Overmantle
Stock No 1095
English Oak Overmantle of fine colour, that has been constructed in the mid nineteenth Century, predominantly using a section from a very high quality Elizabethan backboard from a Poster bed, circa 1580. The two recessed panels have been decorated with various inlaid woods depicting vases of flowers, or possibly stylised Trees of Life, set within a typical ornamented renaissance arch with leaf and bud spandrels to either side. The outer mouldings to these panels are exquisite with the inner mitred strips attractively scratch carved and punched, and the outer sections again inlaid with black and honey coloured woods. They are interspersed with three figures of a cross-armed men two with hats and one with hair and each between a flower composed of four petals at the top, and a grotesque mask below them.
