Boarded Chest

Boarded Chest

Stock No 1085

English Oak six plank Chest with carved front, circa 1490. The front has been carved with lozenges within which are single Roses, the emblem of the Tudors, leaf and bud spandrels to the simulated “panels”, and trinity leaves, probably a Catholic symbol, between the two barbers poles at the centre. This is a rare survival and it would appear that this Chest was rebuilt in the nineteenth century. Presumably the legs had rotted down, and the original top was used to make replacement sides. The top is a replacement, there are later strips to the bottom of the front board, and the lock plate has been replaced.

Dimensions: Width 129.5 cm, Height 56 cm, Depth 48.5 cm

Price: £7500
