Boarded Chair
Stock No 1082
An English Oak Boarded, (or “Boxed”) Armchair, circa 1540 – 1550 with twin panel back below a slot-in cresting. Despite an apparent initial simplicity to this chair’s appearance, it is in fact a highly sophisticated work from the English Renaissance period. There is carved decoration with extensive channel mouldings, deeply gauged stop flutes, and scratch carved twin cruciform motifs at the top of the shaped cresting. The chair is further enhanced by its angled and then downward swept arms which give it great style. This is a rare example of a piece of early English furniture that has been fortunate enough to survive with outstanding surface quality. There would originally have been finials, or plumes, on top of the rear uprights, and there are later anti-tip blocks to the bottom of the rear uprights. There have also been some in-fills to the right hand arm rear joint, side panel and to the front to the arm.
