Coffer

Coffer

Stock No 1077

Magnificent French Gothic Oak boarded coffer, circa 1460 – 1480. The single board top is above the seven panel front which is outstanding with three full length deeply incised flamboyant tracery panels either side of the original lock plate which is above a half panel. The carving on the single boarded front is of a very dynamic design. The tracery patterns within the pointed gothic arches alternate between flower fillers and foliate examples. The foliate embellishment above the arch points cleverly extrudes in front of the carved framing, accentuating the perspective already achieved through the depth of the carving. The original lock is of exquisite workmanship and has a concealed release button to uncover the plate over the keyhole. It also has a charming detail at the bottom with a delightfully modelled fox. The pierced metal strengthening straps on either side are also of very high quality. The long strap hinges are original. The plinth would appear to have been replaced in the mid to late eighteenth century, at which time the top was either refinished or possibly replaced as well.

Dimensions: Width 175cm, Height 76cm, Depth 59cm.

Price: £19,500
