Desk Box
Stock No 1068
Carved Oak Writing Slope, or Desk Box, circa 1660 – 1680. The front is carved with a symmetrical design depicting two Dragons, or Mythical Beasts, facing each other, their tongues projecting in the form of stylised arrow heads. The construction is of simple nailed rebated joints with the lid joined by the original heavy “butterfly” hinges. The interior has a moulded shelf compartment and does not appear to have ever had any drawers. Below the later lock plate is the initial B, and to the right is the witness of the letter I which appears to have been chiselled off at some later date. Another feature of this box is the use of applied mouldings to frame the front carved panel.
