Valuables Box
Stock No 1065
English Pine carved valuable box, dated 1637. This is a rare early survival, as Pine is both quite a fragile wood and is also very susceptible to woodworm. It is therefore quite an exceptional example to have survived in such excellent condition. It is dome topped, and has its original wire hinges, lock and escutcheon plate. It is carved symmetrically with a pair of lozenges to the front and one to each side all four surrounded with profuse geometric design. The domed top has a well carved Acanthus leaf in the centre and again has profuse linear carving all around it. The back panel has the date carved into it.
