Coffer

Coffer

Stock No 1064

English Oak carved coffer, circa 1620, of excellent colour and surface quality. Typical style and timber of the South West, most probably originating from the Exeter workshops of that period.

With florid decoration, this is a fine example of carved design from the period of James 1. The decoration is first rate, as demonstrated by the wonderful coherence of the patterns on the front, from what at first appears to be a simple repetitive “S” scroll pattern. The rails, styles and muntins all have small running “S” scrolls whereas the three front panels build on this theme and have large double joined “S” scrolls with abstract foliate work above and below them. In contrast the side panels have a simple embellishment with scratch carved decoration.

This coffer is in remarkably original condition, having the original escutcheon, hasp and lock. It also has the cleats it started life with and the chamfered brace beneath its lid. In addition to this it does not appear to have lost any of its height.
The hinges have been replaced at some time but have been in place for a couple of hundred years or more. The lid of the till is lost.

Dimensions: Width 140cm, depth 60.5cm, height 77.5cm
